is included in the | Hedsor is a parish on the rivers Thames and Wick, one and a half miles south from Bourne End station, on the Maidenhead, Wycombe and Oxford branch of the Great Western railway, 3 and a half south-west from Beaconsfield, 6 south-east from High Wycombe and 4 north from Maidenhead, in the Wycombe division of the county, hundred of Desborough, petty sessional division of Marlow, county court district, rural district and rural deanery of Wycombe, arch-deaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Oxford. the church of St. Nicholas, one of the smallest in the county, is beautifully situated on a hill 213 feet above the level of the sea, within Hedsor Park, and is a structure of chalk and flint with stone facings in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, baptistery, west porch and a belfry: according to a somewhat eccentric inscription on a tomb at the west end of the church, it was "re-edified" by Roland Hynd, then owner of the manor, in 1575: a north aisle was added and the church restored generally by George, 4th Lord Boston, in 1862, and a reredos of stone enriched with mosaics has since been erected ; the chancel screen, of oak with brass gates, is a memorial to Florance George Henry, 5th Lord Boston, who died 3rd January 1877: there are several memorial windows, a tablet to Roland Hynd, and one erected by Frederick, 2nd Baron Boston , in 1901 to Nathaniel Hooke, author of a Roman History, who died 19th July 1763, and is buried here: in 1886 considerable alterations were made in the church, a baptistery was erected on the site of the old porch, and a new porch built at the west end of he aisle: the stone pulpit was adorned with quatrefoils, mosaic work and marble bosses, and the interior rearranged and decorated: the church affords 150 sittings: the churchyard presents an unusually simple appearance, from the fact that all the tombstones are level with the turf, which custom has always prevailed here, these are only from 12 to 18 inches square, and simply bear names and dates. The register dates from the year 1678; many earlier entries are included in the registers of Little Marlow. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1904 by the Rev. Robert George Suther Demaus M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. There are charities of £2 annual value. Hedsor House, rebuilt in 1860, the residence of Phillip Shephard esq. is a mansion of white brick with stone dressings, in the Italian style, and stands 303 feet above sea level: the house is surrounded by extensive grounds, in which, on the summit of a hill, stands an ornamental castellated building overlooking Cookham: the square tower was erected by George, 3rd baron Boston, in memory of King George III. The soil is gravelly loam; subsoil, sand. The land is wood, arable and pasture. The area is 531 acres of land and 11 of water; the population in 1931 was 207 in the civil and 215 in the ecclesiastical parish. Under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act, Well End was been transferred from Hedsor to Little Marlow for civil purposes. | ||

Marlow (Little)
Hedsor
Hedsor is a parish on the rivers Thames and Wick, one and a half miles south from Bourne End station, on the Maidenhead, Wycombe and Oxford branch of the Great Western railway, 3 and a half south-west from Beaconsfield, 6 south-east from High Wycombe and 4 north from Maidenhead, in the Wycombe division of the county, hundred of Desborough, petty sessional division of Marlow, county court district, rural district and rural deanery of Wycombe, arch-deaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Oxford. the church of St.
