Marlow (Little)
is a parish two miles from Great Marlow market place, in the Wycombe division of the county, hundred of Desborough, 1st division of Desborough petty sessional division, rural district, county court district and rural deanery of Wycombe, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford; it is a widely scattered place, with a few farms and shops, and bounded on the south by the Thames. Gas and electricity are available. Water is supplied by the Marlow Water Co. The church of St. John the Baptist is a plan edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north porch and a lofty western tower containing 3 bells and a clock: it was originally erected in 1190, but of the earlier building the Early English tower and chancel only remain: the nave and aisles, rebuilt in 1430, were reseated with open benches, an organ placed in the south aisle and the church carefully restored in 1866; a gallery and the high square pews were then removed, the timber roof of the chancel opened and two elegant Early English windows in the chancel restored: the east window is stained, and there are three others in the church are many marble tablets to the Nugent, Chase and Warren families and an altar tomb with brasses to Nicholas Ledewich, ob. 1430: there is also a tablet recording the names of the men connected with this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: during 1902 various restorations and repairs were carried out at a cost of about £1,000, the 14th century roofs being re-covered and the window mullions renewed; in the course of the work traces of the rood-loft, a priest's door in the chancel and a Norman piscina were brought to light: there are 270 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from 1562; marriages and burials from 1559; these books also include the baptisms and burials of Hedsor till about 1590. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £340, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Capt. J. E. M. Bradish-Ellames, and held since 1935 by the Rev. Henry Lloyd Arnould M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. There is a Parish Council, which also acts as the burial board; Henry Langton Stephenson esq. chairman. The Congregational mission hall at Well End, built in 1886, is of red brick, and will seat 120. The Upper Thames Sailing Club was its head quarters and club house at Bourne End. There are charities of £24 yearly value left by Field-Marshal Sir George Nugent bart. G.C.B/, D.C.L. d. 1848, and Messrs. Allanson and Birch, for distribution in bread and clothing. The Manor House, the seat of Capt. John Edward Montegue Bradish-Ellames, is partly of Elizabethan date and stands in its own grounds on the north bank of the Thames; the south front overlooks well laid out pleasure grounds and contains many noble and ornamental trees. Messrs. H. J. Mash Limited are the principal landowners. The soil is chalk, flint and gravel. The chief crop is wheat, and there is much woodland abounding with beech trees. A portion of Bourne End, Well End and a great portion of Flackwell Heath are in this parish. The area is 3,337 acres of land and inland water; the population in 1931 was 725 in the civil and 1,102 in the ecclesiastical parish.
The Abbey Estate, Bourne End, situated chiefly in this parish and partly in Wooburn, is laid out in a very artistic manner: there is a trout stream running through the estate: the property originally formed part of the Abbey farm, where slight remains of the Benedictine Priory dating from the early 13th century and probably founded by the De Clares, can still be seen. the entire site of this nunnery was excavated in 1902 by Mr. Vaughan Williams, of the Abbey Farm house, which is largely constructed from materials from the monastic buildings, the only part of which now above ground is part of the north-east angle of the frater (refectory), but the whole plan has been made out and comprises an aisleless church, with north transept having an eastern chapel, and a western tower; south of the nave were cloisters, having on the west cellars with guest hall over; on the east chapter house and warming house with dorter (dormitory) over; on the south the frater with kitchen, and south of this the infirmary: part of the left of a mailed effigy, floor tiles of the 14th and 15th centuries, and a stone coffin have been found. By the construction of a weir, about three-quarters of a mile of water is now available for navigation, with roads so arranged that the gardens of the houses slope to the water's edge: numerous bungalows and quaint thatched cottages and boat houses have been erected.
Under the provisions of the "Divided Parishes Act" WELL END has been transferred from Hedsor to Little Marlow.
Under the Bucks Review Order, 1934, part of Little Marlow was transferred to Chepping Wycombe Rural and a part of that parish was added.

Hedsor
is a parish on the rivers Thames and Wick, 1.5 miles south from Bourne End station, on the Maidenhead, Wycombe and Oxford branch of the Great Western Railway, 3.5 south-west from Beaconsfield, 6 south-east from High Wycombe and 4 north from Maidenhead, in the Wycombe division of the county, hundred of Desborough, petty sessional division of Marlow, county court district, rural district and rural deanery of Wycombe, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford.
Electricity is available. The church of St. Nicholas, one of the smallest in the county, is beautifully situated on a hill 213 feet above the level of the sea, within Hedsor Park, and is a structure of chalk and flint with stone facings in the Decorated style consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, baptistery, west porch and a belfry: according to a somewhat eccentric inscription on a tomb at the west end of the church, it was "re-edified" by Roland Hynd, then owner of the manor in 1575: a north aisle was added and the church restored generally by George, 4th Lord Boston, in 1862, and a reredos of stone enriched with mosaics has since been erected; the chancel screen, of oak with brass gates, is a memorial to Florance (sic) George Henry, 5th Lord Boston, who died 3rd January 1877; there are several memorial windows, a tablet to Roland Hynd and one erected by Frederick, 2nd Baron Boston, in 1801, to Nathaniel Hooke, author of a Roman History, who died 19th July 1763, and is buried here, in 1886 considerable alterations were made in the church, a baptistery was erected on the site of the old porch, and a new porch built at the west end of the aisle: the stone pulpit was adorned with quatrefoils, mosaic work and marble bosses, and the interior rearranged and decorated: the church affords 150 sittings: the churchyard presents an unusually simple appearance, from the fact that all the tombstones are level with the turf, which custom has always prevailed here, these are only from 12 to 18 inches square, and simply bear names and dates. The register dates from the year 1678; many earlier entries are included in the registers of Little Marlow. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1937 by the Rev. Ernest Patrick Horton. There are charities of £2 annual value. Hedsor Park, rebuilt in 1860, the residence of Phillip Shephard esq. is a mansion of white brick with stone dressings, in the Italian style, and stands 303 feet above sea level: the house is surrounded by extensive grounds, in which, on the summit of a hill, stands an ornamental castellated building overlooking Cookham: the square tower was erected by George, 3rd Baron Boston, in memory of King George III. The soil is gravelly loam, subsoil, sand. The land is wood, arable and pasture. The area is 531 acres of land and 11 of water; the population on 1931 was 207 in the civil and 215 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Under the provisions of the Divided Parishes Act, Well End has been transferred from Hedsor to Little Marlow for civil purposes.
